When Erin was walking with me this morning, we came across an older lady that lives in our building. We’ve never come across her before, so I walked up to her to say hello. Erin on the other hand, tried to keep walking. She saw something about this lady that I just didn’t see.
The old lady just looked at me and then looked at Erin. She didn’t say anything and it was starting to become awkward. You can only stand in silence for so long! Since I was a bit confused, I wagged my stumpy tail and panted a bit. You know, to show her I am friendly? Erin gently pulled my leash, guiding me to the elevator, and said, “C’mon Roxie, not everyone wants to be your friend.” (WHAAAAT?!)
At this point the old lady was trailing behind us into the elevator and started rambling. Behind her thick glasses her eyes seemed very large and unblinking, as she said, “It’s not that. I’m just not a dog-person. I’m very happy for people who are dog-people or cat-people and can have dogs or cats, but that’s just not me. I can’t pet them or anything like that.”
Erin shared a story about how her mom was fearful of dogs, due to being bitten twice as a child. The old lady just shrugged and said, “Oh I’m not afraid or allergic…” and then trailed off as we stepped out of the elevator onto our floor, leaving her behind. Erin waved and said, “Have a nice morning!” as she does after most elevator rides. Usually the others say, “You too,” but she just blinked at us instead. (Finally -I think that’s the first time she blinked this decade! Was she scared of little ol’ me?)
Honestly though… What on earth happened this morning? Who was that person? Does she fall into some weird category of “Iguana-People” or is she that rare-breed that just doesn’t like pets in general? (Maybe an alien-imposter? I think I’d be able to smell that though…) I saw Erin reading an article about something like this, all the while making the face she makes when she is confused or doesn’t like something she has just eaten. Furrowed brow, scrunched-up nose, the works! I don’t think either of us have encountered a person like this before. Have you?
Erin has the summers off, which means we get to play all day! I really tired myself out at the park this morning. Erin eventually cut me off, but I still skipped most of the way home, hoping she would throw it again.
I kind of overdid it and tried to lay down to take a break in the grass. Since we were 2 blocks away, Erin just picked me up and carried me home. I wonder if I can trick her into carrying me everywhere?

I only surround myself with stable, friendly dogs.
Who are you spending your time with? Are they good to be around? Do they leave you feeling better than you were before?
